Dawning 4000L, Hundreds Terabytes Data Processing
Super-server, is Coming Out

¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡Dawning 4000L, the largest data processing super-server
in China, is coming out recently. This machine, which has
been ranked as the ¡°aircraft carrier¡± in China¡¯s super-server
industry, not only provides hundreds terabytes data processing
capability, but also overcomes many key issues to support
data intensive applications. Dawning 4000L is developed by
National Research Center for Intelligent Computing Systems
(NCIC) and Dawning Information Industry Co., Ltd. NCIC is
a division of Institute of Computing Technology (ICT), Chinese
Academy of Sciences (CAS). Dawning 4000L Super-server is
suitable for both high performance scientific computing applications
and information services. It is a milestone for China¡¯s high
performance super-server industry, which is changing its
focus from scientific computing to information services.
Dawning 4000L breaks the China¡¯s super-server record again
and leads the super-server industry to a new era.
¡¡¡¡Dawning 4000L is the largest IDC data processing machine
in China now. It has been designed to provide more than 3
teraflops computing capability with 644 processors, 644GB
physical memory and 100 terabytes storage. The machine can
be upgraded online to 6.75 teraflops computing capability
with 1300 processors, 4000GB physical memory and 600 terabytes
storage. The whole system will consist with 80 racks and
need 160KW power supply.
¡¡¡¡Dawning 4000L is an innovation and progress of traditional
cluster technology in the new era. It is focused on data
intensive applications. Spreader, an intelligent file browser,
supports fast file search and browse over 100 terabytes storage,
so that finding useful information become much easier. Intelligent
NIC with its special software makes it easier to exchange
real-time data with Internet. TapeShare, a system uses tapes
to backup data, further improves the capacity of sharing
devices for massive data storing. Dawning 4000L has two grid
enabling techniques. Intelligent control terminal can manage
the huge system in security. GridView provides grid visual
angle of the system. Dawning 4000L has flexible on-line scalability.
It provides 7 kinds of monitoring mechanisms to guarantee
system reliability.
¡¡¡¡Dawning 4000L provides a high capability in massive data
processing. It can process more than 16.3 billion insert
operations and 8.6 billion mixed operations with the parallel
database every day. The average response time of data mining
in millions records is 2.5 seconds. It has real time processing
capability to deal with the information generated by 40 million
persons 200 SMS each per day. It has real time processing
capability to deal with more than 650,000 Internet packets
per second each node and has a total capability of 32Gbps
data connection volume. The 400Mbps data per-character processing
capability on each node can satisfy the requirement of China
Telecom¡¯s Internet backbone. Dawning 4000L has such a powerful
data processing capability and has been ranked as the ¡°aircraft
carrier¡± in China super-server industry.
¡¡¡¡Dawning4000L is co-developed by National Research Center
of Intelligent Computing Systems (NCIC) and Dawning Information
Industry Co., Ltd. The latter has adequate experiences in
building large-scale commercial computing systems. Its product
series, Dawning 1000, 2000, 3000, TC1700, etc. are all widely
used in many fields, from which come the "application-oriented" and "customer-oriented" characteristics
of Dawning systems. NCIC has been undertaking the research
and development of many key programs from the National 863
High-Tech Project for over a decade and exploring the development
approaches of High-performance computing systems in China.
The development team of NCIC combined with the marketing
capability leads to the absolute leading position of Dawning
super-servers in the market of home-made high-performance
computing systems in China.
¡¡¡¡Dawning 4000L represents a new stage in the development
of national high-performance computing industry and shows
the strength of our country in this field. It will not only

Research Background of Dawning 4000L
Dawing 4000L is a key project of the Knowledge Invocation
Program of Institute of Computing Technology (ICT) of Chinese
Academy of Sciences (CAS). It¡¯s also a great achievement
of second period of Knowledge Invocation Program of CAS.
Dawning 4000L is developed by National Research Center for
Intelligent Computer Systems (NCIC) and Dawning Information
Industry Co., Ltd. It is designed for the objective of satisfying
with the national strategic requirements. In addition, the
Dawning 4000L has huge potential on civilian market, it can
be used for E-commerce, E-bank, securities business, petroleum,
etc.
Brief Introduction to the Principal of Dawing 4000L project
Dr.Sun Ninghui, born in March 1968, is graduated from Peking
University in 1989 and got his doctor¡¯s degree from the Institute
of Computing Technology, CAS in 1999. Currently, he is a
professor of ICT, a supervisor of PH.D candidates and the
director of NCIC, also chief scientist of Dawning. He has
participated in the projects of the high performance computers
and super-servers -- Dawning ¢ñ, Dawning 1000, Dawning 2000
, Dawning 3000 and series of Dawning scalable servers. He
has won, for several times, the prize of National S&T
progress awards and the S&T awards of CAS, as well as
Youth scientist Prize of CAS. Now, he is the leader of Dawning
4000 project, which is a key project of the National 863
Hi-Tech Program of the National Tenth Five-Year Plan.

(NCIC)
National Research Center for Intelligent Computing Systems
(NCIC) was founded at March 1990, directly led by 863-306
experts. It aims to research on the key issues of National
Hi-Tech Program in the super-server field. The role of the
NCIC is to research and develop the high performance computers
and super-servers. It has undertaken a series of key projects
of 863, 973 and Knowledge Invocation Program of CAS. NCIC
is coming into being, and greatly contributed to the development
of high performance computers and super-servers of China.
Dawning Information Industry Co., Ltd
Dawning Group is founded in June 1995,based on key R&D
fruits from National 863 High-tech Program. It focuses on
the research and development of computer servers and owns
the intellectual proprietary of all series of Dawning servers,
which can satisfy customers¡¯ demands from super-servers to
common IA servers. Advanced technology, outstanding performance
and satisfying services make Dawning Ltd. the laureate of
National Sci-Tech Progress Gold Medal and many other grand
